Algonquian Stories: Cockacoeske

Cockacoeske was a female weroanska (Chief) in the Powhatan matrilineal line of succession and a leader of the Pamunkeys. She emerged in 1676 during Nathaniel Bacon’s Rebellion to lead a rebellion of her own. She successfully challenged the attempt of Bacon and his followers to enslave Virginia Indians by authoring the Treaty of Middle Plantation that cast Indians as tributaries of the English. Her remarkable courage, resilience, and intelligence was another example of the agency of other Virginia Algonquian leaders, such as Powhatan, Pocahontas, Pacquiquineo, and Opechancanough, as they created The Other Jamestown. Together they thwarted total subjugation and extermination of Indians and contributed to the Algonquian Exchange.
